Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse or pelvic prolapse is a common condition – mostly found in women after age 50 – where the supports that hold the vagina inside the body become weakened, and allow bulging or sagging. Women may have a feeling of pressure or bulging inside the vagina; sometimes they can touch or feel tissue bulging out past the opening of the vagina. Sometimes women don't have any symptoms at all, but may be told (by a doctor, for instance) that "something is prolapsing, or falling down." Since prolapse usually occurs slowly over time, the symptoms can be hard to recognize or understand.
